President's
Letter
by Andrew E. Doehrel
"When
moral principles, rather than persons, are candidates for power,
to vote is to perform a moral duty, and not to vote is to neglect
a duty."
Thomas Paine, 1803
On November 7, 2000, it will be your moral duty to vote! This year's
election isn't only important because the next leader of the United
States will be elected. It's important because we have the power
to bring balance and fairness back to Ohio's Supreme Court, and
ensure continuation of a pro-business climate in the state's General
Assembly.
In this issue, you will find helpful information on candidates running
for seats on the state Supreme Court, as well as the General Assembly.
The Chamber board of directors, committees and staff have devoted
numerous hours identifying the candidates who best understand the
issues of the business community. I encourage you to save this issue,
take it to the ballot box with you and even share it with your co-workers.
For the Ohio Supreme Court, the Ohio Chamber of Commerce Political
Action Committee (OCCPaC) endorses incumbent Justice Deborah Cook
and Judge Terrence O'Donnell. When elected, these two candidates
will restore fairness and balance to the state's high court. Please
be aware that the Supreme Court candidates are listed at the very
end of this year's ballot. Therefore, it is imperative that you
vote the entire ballot, top to bottom, or better yet, start at the
bottom and work up!
For the Ohio General Assembly, eight candidates receive the OCCPaC's
highest designation of Chamber Choice candidate. The Chamber Choice
candidates are selected from district races where there's a clear
difference between candidates on job creation and economic growth
issues. Many times, these candidates are locked in tight races and
need additional resources - financial and otherwise - to win. When
a Chamber Choice candidate wins, all Ohioans win. Your support in
these races may make the difference. So, I urge you to help these
candidates in any way you can.
Finally, we have our OCCPaC endorsed candidates for the Ohio General
Assembly. These 73 candidates are deserving of your vote and assistance
based upon their P.a.C.E. voting record or P.a.C.E. candidate survey
results.
For even more information on this year's election, you can visit
our Web site at www.ohiochamber.com. Here, you will find an extensive
on-line Voter's Guide that contains all of the information on Ohio's
races. Hard copies of the Voter's Guide are available by contacting
the communications department at the Ohio Chamber (800) 622-1893
or (614) 228-4201. Additional copies of the election information
contained in this issue are available by contacting the communications
department as well.
This year's election is crucial to Ohio's economic well-being. I
urge you to review all of the information the Ohio Chamber has prepared
for you. And please remember, as the Chamber has been promoting
for several months, to restore balance in Ohio's Supreme Court,
vote for Justice Deborah Cook and Judge Terrence O'Donnell.
As statesman Daniel Webster said in 1826, "Sink or swim, live
or die, survive or perish, I give my hand and my heart to this vote."
