The 2007 Salt Fork Legislative Conference was full of BIG IDEAS in the areas of health care, energy and economic development. Grace-Marie Turner president of the Galen Institute and Joe San Filippo, chief health care strategist for Nationwide Better Health presented their thoughts on health care stressing the need for new ideas that will not only bring health care costs down, but also improve people’s health. Don McConnell, president of Battelle Energy Technology discussed ideas for the future of energy, not only in generation but also production. McConnell’s presentation was the perfect prelude into a session on the history on Ohio’s electric restructuring that featured Sen. Ron Amstutz, Rep. Lou Blessing and Alan Schriber, chairman of the Ohio Public Utilities Commission. That evening, the next (and returning) president of The Ohio State University, E. Gordon Gee attended the pool-side reception and met with the conference attendees.

Friday kicked off with Bruce Katz, vice president and director of Metropolitan Policy for the Brookings Institution. Katz presented the institution’s latest report on revitalizing American’s older industrial cities and then joined numerous legislators and attendees for an exchange of information over lunch.

For the first time in the long history of Salt Fork, Ohio’s governor and all of the legislative leaders made presentations. Gov. Ted Strickland, Senate President Bill Harris, Senate Minority Leader Theresa Fedor, Speaker of the House Jon Husted and House Minority Leader Joyce Beatty all outlined their goals and key issues going forward.

Even though the conference had a diverse group of speakers, addressing a myriad of issues all of them had one central theme: Ohio has the right “tools” to be a leader in the nation. Ohio still has a manufacturing base that can be adapted for today’s needs and a skilled workforce that is eager for progress. Yes, the state has issues and challenges, but Ohio has all of the resources to be THE state to live and work in the future.

The Ohio Chamber would like to thank all of the speakers, particularly Gov. Strickland, Senate President Harris, Sen. Fedor, Speaker Husted, Rep. Beatty and Dr. Gee for making this year’s Salt Fork program truly one of the best the Ohio Chamber has ever hosted.

If you missed this year’s event, the Power Point presentations are available below. Mark your calendars now for the 2009 event, September 9-11!
