As Ohio's largest and most diverse statewide business advocacy group, the Ohio Chamber of Commerce has been a consistent voice for business since 1893. We are dedicated to presenting Ohio lawmakers with the business perspective on issues.
We continue that tradition, advancing legislation that will support successful Ohio businesses.
The Panic of 1893 was an uncertain time for Ohio and our country. Over 15,000 businesses and 500 banks failed almost overnight. Unemployment was nearly 20 percent, the worst depression the United States had seen to that point.
In the midst of the economic disaster, a group of 55 visionary business owners in Ohio decided to take initiative and form a group with a common cause to protect the business community and free enterprise, the cornerstone of our society.
As an article from the November 6, 1893 edition of The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer professes:
“From among various commercial organizations throughout the state there was organized in this city yesterday a new institution known as the Ohio State Board of Commerce. Although but a few hours old, the infant is one of the healthiest of its kind. It is as vigorous as a young colt and promises to become a great power throughout the state.”
In our 117 years of existence, through 59 Ohio General Assemblies and 30 governors, the mission of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce has remained solid:
